Packing for Baby

When you are leaving on a six-week trip where the weather will be from 30 to 81 degrees F, and your baby grows out of his clothes faster than you can pull them out of the box… what DO you do?  More specifically, WHAT do you pack?  And – maybe most importantly – HOW many diapers should you take?

Diaper Dilemma

Instead of sticking them in wherever, without an exact count, and letting them get smushed like in the bottom of the diaper bag on a normal day out closer to home, I decided to be a bit more organized. I used gallon ziploc bags, and put 10 diapers in each bag. Each bag is for one day’s worth (24 hr period). This is just an estimate because I don’t know exactly how many we go through in a day, but I’m hoping I erred on the side of a couple extra rather than not enough.  Not enough is a bad deal when it comes to diapers!

Then I labeled them.  This makes it simple for packing – Plane #1 will go in the diaper bag.  Plane #2 will go in the carry-on (and be moved to the diaper bag as necessary).  Plane Spare and Thursday’s bags will go in the carry-on as well, just in case we need more diapers or our checked luggage gets lost.  The rest, a couple more days’ worth, can go anywhere in our checked bag.  It’s a long enough trip that we will (obviously) buy diapers along the way, so having exactly 10 in each bag, it will be easy to figure out how many we’re using – and subsequently how many we should buy – by how many are left at the end of each day!

Happiness is… having enough diapers left over to switch from cloth to disposables later today (a day and a half before we leave) for simplicity’s sake!

I’m curious as to how other families travel in regards to what they pack for baby clothing and diaper wise.  I’m just guessing… and I hope it works!  Leave a comment with any tips, tricks or # of outfits/diapers you took along!

we’re heading to Peru this Saturday, so Mia can meet the other half of her family. We’re excited but also a bit nervous for the 12 hour flight. Lots of packing here as well. Definitely lots of baby clothes and supports/wipes/baby wrap/. Love breastfeeding. So much easier!

I agree about breastfeeding! I couldn’t imagine dealing with bottles and all. It would be so much more complicated! And I’m taking my favorite baby wrap of course! 🙂
